ADD/ADHD
Brain Vitality EEG Mapping Symptoms
ADD, also known as attention deficit disorder, is an outdated term for what we now call ADHD, also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADD was first defined in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
At first, experts separated this condition into two subtypes:
- ADD without hyperactivity
- ADD with hyperactivity
These two subtypes are now combined into one condition: ADHD. Today, ADHD is one of the most common mental health conditions found in children.
In fact, around 9.4 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are currently dealing with ADHD, which is just over 6 million people. However, it is important to remember that adults can experience ADHD too: nearly 2.6% of the US population. It is likely that adult ADHD is underdiagnosed, since many cases that stem from childhood were probably not recognised. About 6.7 percent of US adults have symptoms of adult ADHD, not all of whom are formally diagnosed.
The Different Types of ADHD
Experts have been able to identify three different types of ADHD based on the symptoms involved. These symptoms are:
- Inattention
- Impulsivity and hyperactivity
- A combination of both
What are the Symptoms of Depression?
Mental health professionals are no longer diagnosing ADD. Instead, they will diagnose one of the three different types of ADHD based on the symptoms you or your child are experiencing. Sharing all of the symptoms you are experiencing with us will allow us to make a more precise determination.
